Connected Islands

Building a Regenerative Digital Future, Together

The digital spaces we inhabit quietly shape our habits, relationships, and collective future. As our lives become increasingly intertwined with technology, the question is no longer simply what tools we use, but what kind of culture they invite.

What kind of digital ecosystems do we want to cultivate together?

We imagine a growing network of sovereign, community-managed islands—privately owned servers connected through shared values, open standards, and mutual support. Each island is independent, yet strengthened by its relationships with others.

We help individuals, communities, and organizations cultivate digital spaces built with open-source technologies, where privacy, transparency, stewardship, and meaningful collaboration can naturally flourish.

What We Build

Private Open‑Source Infrastructure

You Own It. We Help Tend It.

Every island is built around four complementary foundations: a community-owned Linux server, Nextcloud Hub for collaboration, a private email server, and, when needed, WordPress for a public presence.

Together they form a resilient digital home—one designed to support healthy collaboration rather than extractive digital models.

A well-tended Linux server forms the foundation of every island. Together we steward infrastructure that is community-owned and independently hosted, creating greater autonomy, resilience, and the freedom to shape our digital environment according to our shared values.

Together we collaborate in an open-source workspace for files, documents, calendars, contacts, conversations, and shared projects. Our work remains at the centre—without surveillance, advertising models, or vendor lock-in.

We communicate through infrastructure we collectively steward. No scanning, profiling, or data mining—just conversations that remain between the people they belong to.

When needed, we create a public or internal web presence built on the same principles. Simple, respectful, and free from unnecessary tracking, allowing our online presence to reflect the values behind our work.

Who Are We

Kamyar

For more than twenty years, Kamyar has worked with Linux and open-source systems, designing and tending privacy-respecting digital infrastructure. Alongside this, he has explored dialogue, regenerative leadership, and practices that deepen our capacity to listen, collaborate, and learn together.

Einar

Einar has worked as a UNIX/Linux software developer for over 30 years. Working for Boeing Aerospace and at NASA. In the last decade he has been setting up and managing open source, private servers for online groups.

Islands in Practice

PureGold Server

PureGold is an experiment in a regenerative digital culture—one rooted in care, transparency, shared responsibility, and the intelligence that emerges through genuine participation.

It began with a simple question:

How might we cultivate a healthier relationship with technology?

The result is a shared digital home, built with open-source tools and continually tended by its community.

The Listening Circle

The Listening Circle is an informal space where people in the Purification Space come together to offer support to each other. One of the main features of the LC is several opportunities each week to meet online to discuss what is on our hearts. For those who do not wish to join the online group calls, we offer other ways to stay connected — one on one relationships that have developed, and a newsletter that keeps everyone up to date on what is happening in our community. Periodically, small groups get together to explore a new learning opportunity. We also host our own private servers for online communication, collaboration, and video conferencing.

CI Hub

For groups and individuals that are not yet ready to establish their own island, CI Hub offers a place to begin.

It provides a fully managed Nextcloud environment for files, collaboration, calendars, contacts, video meetings, private email, and optional WordPress hosting. Communities can remain here for as long as they need, while gradually preparing for their own independently managed island whenever the time feels right.

How We Can Help

Technology is only part of the journey. We also cultivate the confidence and practical skills needed to care for our own digital spaces together.

PrivateIsland Hub

Managed Nextcloud accounts with optional private email and WordPress hosting.

Build Your Own Island

Together we design, deploy, and steward community-owned infrastructure, thoughtfully adapted to the needs of each group.

Migration Assistance

We offer guided online sessions that help people and communities transition from commercial cloud platforms to open-source alternatives with confidence and care.

How We Work

The way we build is as important as what we build. Connected Islands grows through openness, shared stewardship, and transparent collaboration—principles reflected in both our technologies and the way we organize ourselves.

Open Collective

Connected Islands is supported through Open Collective, allowing our finances to remain transparent while keeping our attention on cultivating digital commons rather than organisational complexity.

Open Source

Open source is more than a licensing model. It is a culture of generosity, shared learning, and collective stewardship.

It encourages technologies that can be understood, adapted, and cared for together. By working in this tradition, we hope to contribute to a growing ecosystem of digital tools and communities that strengthen one another while remaining rooted in openness, trust, and participation.
